Antique Gold Chain Worth $250,000 Found Off Florida Keys

Gun of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha at the Archivo General de Indias

A glint of gold in the sand.

That's what caught Bill Burt's eye last week during a dive about 35 miles off the coast of Key West, where he and his crew were searching for the rear section of the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha, which sunk during a hurricane in 1622.

Burt's eyes didn't deceive him -- that glint was gold. A 40-inch gold chain, to be precise.

The chain, believed to be from the Atocha, is estimated to be worth $250,000. The gold links resembling cotter pins -- 55 of them -- are connected to a black-enameled gold cross measuring 2 inches by 1.25 inches. Surrounding the cross are what appear to be Latin inscriptions.

Also attached to the chain, which is similar to a pair of rosary beads, are a gold religious medallion, a black bead and a gold floweret.

The dive was launched from the deck of the JB Magruder, a salvage vessel owned by Mel Fisher's Treasures.

In 1985, Fisher's team recovered a substantial bulk of the Atocha's treasure, about $450 million in artifacts.

Valuable religious relics often were stored in the ship's wooden rear, or sterncastle, where only the wealthiest passengers -- including clergy and nobility -- sat.

The discovery of this chain gives the crew of the JB Magruder hope of finding the Atocha's sterncastle, believed to have been ripped from the ship during a subsequent hurricane.

Woman tourist's brush with death as she's pinned to deck of fishing boat by 300lbs stingray in terrifying freak accident

A woman tourist was pinned to the deck of a sightseeing boat by a 300lbs stingray after it came hurtling out of the sea as she cruised off the Florida Keys.

Jenny Hausch, 40, was knocked down by the spotted eagle ray, which torpedoed out of the water and landed in the charter boat in which she was a passenger.

She was trapped and gasping for air under its 4ft wide body for three to four minutes.

Boat captain Kelly Klein said:'The ray was slamming this way and slamming that way and she was trying to crawl out backwards from under it, but it kept landing on her.

The bizarre incident took place off the island of Islamorada.

It came almost exactly three years after widow Judy Kay Zagorski, 57, was killed by a spotted eagle ray that leapt from the waves and struck her in the face while she stood aboard a motor-cruiser off Marathon, also in the Florida Keys.

The blow sent Mrs Zagorski, of Michigan, crashing to the deck, fracturing her skull and causing a fatal brain injury.

The spotted eagle ray is also the same species that killed Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin in 2006.
He was impaled through the heart by a ray while diving on the Great Barrier Reef, off Australia.
Wildlife officers on patrol off Islamorada described yesterday how they heard the sounds of panic from across the water as Mrs Hausch, who was on holiday from her hometown of Chicago, Illinois, was sent sprawling by one of the giant sea creatures after it slammed into her.

She was one of several passengers aboard a 26ft catamaran for a private fishing cruise run by Two Chicks Charters, of Islamorada.

'We had just passed the boat and we heard screaming,' said Bret Swensson, an officer with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

His colleague, officer Aja Vickers, who had seen the stingray leaping, told WFOR television station in Miami: 'I could see the ray bouncing around in the boat. I knew ‘Oh my gosh, the ray’s in their boat.’
'I didn’t know if anybody had got hurt. All the kids were crying.'

Mrs Hausch’s husband and others on the boat eventually managed to lift the creature off her and usher it back into the water. She did not require hospital treatment.

Captain Klein told the channel: 'My motto is when you get on a Two Chick charters boat, there's no drama, and boy they messed up that whole thing.'

Wildlife experts say that stingrays do not leap to be aggressive, but may jump occasionally to shake off parasites, avoid predators such as sharks, or while giving birth.

Officer Vickers said: 'This is not an ‘attack’. These things are not looking to, you know, have a little human meal. It’s just a one in a million chance.'

In 2006, millionaire property developer James Bertakis, 81, narrowly escaped death when a spotted eagle ray launched itself at him during a fishing trip off Lighthouse Point, 40 miles north of Miami, piercing his lung and heart with its razor-sharp, venomous barb.

His survival was dubbed a miracle by doctors.
It is not just stingrays that have been involved in occasionally devastating collisions in Florida.

On the state’s Suwannee River, sturgeon fish – which have armour-like plating on their backs and weigh up to 200lbs – have knocked boaters unconscious and caused injuries including broken ribs, collapsed lungs and ruptured spleens during dramatic aerial somersaults.

And less than two weeks ago, Florida resident JoAnn Lorek, 67, suffered a sprained ankle when a 660lbs dolphin bellyflopped into her boat as she cruised with friends off Marco Island, Florida.

5 Places to Visit in Florida

Florida Keys - the string of tiny islands is several hours away from Orlando by car, or a couple hundred dollars away by plane.  By all accounts, it’s completely worth the time and money it would take to get there.  I’m dying to see the white sands and clear waters for myself and hopefully spend a little time walking in Hemingway’s footsteps (even if I hate his novels).

Amelia Island - I’ve been told these little island is gorgeous and would love to go horseback riding along the beaches.

Destin - if you haven’t spent a lot of time in the Southeast, you may have never heard of Destin, Florida.  It’s a popular vacation destination for families who live in this part of the country and I’m told it’s similar to Navarre Beach, which I love.

Plant City – about 75% of America’s strawberries come from here.  I love strawberries.  Naturally, I need to visit, preferably during the Strawberry Festival.

Sanibel Island - almost every Floridian I know has spent a romantic weekend on the world famous beaches of Sanibel Island.  The orientation of the island in the waters of the  Gulf of Mexico make it perfect for shelling as an inordinate amount of whole shells wash ashore constantly.

That’s my Florida wishlist.  I have just over 4 months to make the rounds.  Is there anywhere else I should make sure to visit?

Vegas-style casinos to boost Florida tourism

It's already one of the most visited states in the US, the home of Disney World and the chosen retirement destination for most of the American middle class. But if a group of senators get their way, Florida could also be home to large Vegas-style casinos - a new initiative to increase the state's conference revenue and encourage gambling fans to make their vacations locally.

The proposed legislation, filed by Floridian senators Dennis Jones and Maria Sachs last Friday, would allow for up to five casino-resort complexes which would have to contain at least 1,000 rooms and 500,000 square feet of meeting space. Currently, the largest casinos in the state, owned by the indigenous Seminole people, have around 500 rooms.

The senators estimate the five casinos could bring in an extra 5 million new visitors to Florida each year, as well as encouraging more of its 3.5 million citizens who venture out of state for gambling trips to stay local. The large-scale meeting facilities could see the state take a bigger slice of trade show revenue, too. "Right now we're not a major player in the trade show industry", said Jones, who heads the Senate Regulated Industries Committee, responsible for gambling permissions in the state. "And if the Legislature thinks this bill is worthy, they'll help move it along."

The news comes after reports of significant recovery in the state's property industry, particularly in Miami, where cut-price repossessed homes are attracting growing numbers of overseas investors. The bill allows for one of the casinos to be in the Miami area, which could see an added boost to the local real estate market.

Rick Scott To Tour Across US For Florida Tourism

Gov. Rick Scott will tour across United States to promote Florida Tourism. Gov Rick Scott along with Florida Tourism will organize Share a Little Sunshine Tour starting March 1.

The aim of this tour is to encourage tourism in Florida. Gov. Rick Scott and his team will begin two day tour in Orlando which will move to Washington, Philadelphia, New York City and Chicago.

Visit Florida has aimed at the destinations recently suffered from the extreme cold weather. Gov. Rick Scott aims to encourage tourists from these cities to travel the Sunshine State of Florida.

This tour has been organized to boost tourism in Florida which suffered a major setback after the Gulf Oil Spill in April 2010. Several beaches in Florida were ruined by the tar balls. Even though oil spill affected less than 5 per cent beaches in Florida, media coverage exaggerated the situation.

All beaches of Florida are not clean and ready to host tourists. To attract tourists, Visit Florida has come up with several unique ideas. Share a Little Sunshine Tour is one of them.

During the tour 120 people will be selected randomly through the call-in to CBS Radio station in Chicago. These people will travel to Orlando along with Gov. Rick Scott in a chartered plane from Chicago to spend a four day stay.
